How should I prep for my facelift?

How should I prep for my facelift?

If you have consulted with a plastic surgeon and booked to have facelift surgery, it’s important to use the weeks before surgery to make the necessary preparations for the operation.  But how should you prep for your facelift.

Things to do to prepare for facelift surgery:

  1. If you smoke, it’s best to stop smoking at least 6 weeks before surgery.  Smoking can cause anesthesia-related complications, and hinder the healing process.
  2. Stop taking blood thinning medications such as aspirin at least 2 weeks before surgery, as they prevent the blood from clotting and cause bleeding.  You should also stop taking any nutritional supplements, diet pills, pain killers, and anti-inflammatory drugs at this time.
  3. Lab work requested by your plastic surgeon should be done at least 2 weeks prior to surgery.
  4. Fill prescriptions for post-op medications, so they will be ready for you after the operation.
  5. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to surgery, to ensure that you are properly hydrated.
  6. Make arrangements with a family member or friend to drive you home after surgery, because you won’t be able to drive yourself.
  7. Do not eat or drink after midnight on the evening before surgery.

Making adequate plans, and taking care of your body in the weeks before facelift surgery, will help to ensure that you achieve the quality results you desire.   It’s also important to schedule at least 2 weeks off work, so that you have adequate time to heal.

When can I return to work after a breast augmentation?

When can I return to work after a breast augmentation?

If you’ve made the decision to have breast augmentation, there are probably many questions you have about the procedure, including the length of the recovery.  Knowing when you can return to work after a breast augmentation is especially important, so that you can make the necessary preparations.

When can I return to work after a breast augmentation?

Most breast augmentation patients can return to work about 1 week after surgery, but this will vary depending on the type of job.  If you have a desk job this timeline should be suitable, but if your job requires a lot of physical activity, you will need additional time off.

During consultation it’s best to ask your surgeon when it’s safe to go back to work and resume normal activities.

Patients that are diligent to follow the post-surgical instructions of their plastic surgeon are usually able to return to work within a few days.   There are also advanced implant techniques that surgeons can use to help minimize recovery after breast augmentation

Recovery after breast augmentation

Factors such as implants size, type, and placement are some of the variables that can affect recovery after breast augmentation. However, it’s important to remember that the healing process takes time, so you need to get plenty of rest to ensure that the body heals properly.

Most patients experience moderate discomfort during the first 3-5 days after breast augmentation, so help will be needed at home during this time.  Full recovery can take up to 6 weeks.

Does an abdominoplasty leave big scars?

Does an abdominoplasty leave big scars?

When it comes to abdominoplasty, potential scarring is a big concern for most patients.  They typically want to know if abdominoplasty leaves big scars, and what can be done to make scars less noticeable.

What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that is done to flatten the tummy by removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the underlying muscles (learn more).

Does an abdominoplasty leave big scars?

The size and shape of the scar after abdominoplasty, will depend on the amount of excess skin and fatty tissue that has to be removed from the lower abdomen.

A full abdominoplasty is typically required for patients that have a lot of excess skin and fat to remove.  The incision for a full tummy tuck is made just above the pubic area, and leaves a scar that extends from hip to hip.  However, the scar is usually hidden under the bikini line, so it’s not visible when wearing a bikini or underwear.

A mini-tummy tuck is performed when patients have a small amount of skin and fat to eliminate.  This incision leaves a scar that is a little longer than a C-section scar.

The incisions from and a tummy tuck heal well over time, and fade significantly after about 1 year (read more).

Is it possible to reduce scarring with abdominoplasty?

It is possible to minimize scarring with abdominoplasty by planning properly for the incisions, and caring for the scar after surgery.  Post surgical treatments such as laser therapy and microneedling can also help to reduce the appearance of scars.

Am I At Risk For Varicose Veins?

Am I At Risk For Varicose Veins?

Do you have a family member struggling with unsightly varicose veins?   Although varicose veins are harmless in most cases, they can sometimes cause health issues when left untreated.  It’s therefore important to know if you are at risk for this vascular condition.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that are typically seen on the legs.  They usually occur because of a deficiency in the one-way valves in the vein, which hinders the ability of the blood to flow out of the vein, which causes it to become swollen and puffy (read more).

Am I at risk for varicose veins?

The following factors may increase your risk for varicose veins:

  • Obesity:  People that are overweight are more likely to develop varicose veins because excessive weight can impede blood circulation, and cause the valve in the vein to weaken.
  • Pregnancy: Varicose veins are common in pregnant women, due to hormonal changes.  Hormonal fluctuations can cause the walls of the blood vessel to weaken and increase pressure in the leg veins, resulting in varicose veins.
  • Sitting or standing for long periods: When you remain in one position for a long time the blood does not circulate as it should, causing the blood to pool in the vein.
  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop varicose veins, because they have higher levels of the hormone progesterone.  Researchers believe that progesterone can cause the veins to dilate, and this in turn damages the valves in the veins.
  • Family history of the condition:  If you have family members with varicose veins, there is a greater chance you will develop them too.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Painful?

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Painful?

Have you decided to get laser therapy to remove a tattoo you no longer like?  If so, you are probably anxious to find out exactly how painful laser tattoo removal is likely to be.

How laser tattoo removal works

The laser emits a beam of light that breaks up the ink particles deposited in the deep dermal layer of the skin.   The resulting heat shatters the ink particles, which are then removed by the white blood cells in the body over the following weeks.

How many laser tattoo removal treatments will I need?

Depending on the type of laser technology being used, laser tattoo removal can take anywhere from 5-6 treatments.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

It’s important to remember that tattoos are designed to be permanent, so the ink used is inserted into the deep layer of the skin.  As a result, patients will experience some discomfort during laser tattoo removal, because the laser heats the ink particles to very high temperatures.

Also, some areas such as the hands and feet are more sensitive, so removing a tattoo from these areas may be uncomfortable.  However, most patients agree that having laser tattoo removal is less painful than having a laser inked.

Doctors use skin numbing options such as numbing creams and ice packs, to minimize pain during laser tattoo removal.

Enlighten laser for tattoo removal

The Enlighten laser by Cutera is a less painful option for laser tattoo removal.  Enlighten is a cutting-edge laser that uses Pico technology to remove tattoos, which allows it to deliver heat faster and more efficiently.

Are Mommy Makeovers Expensive?

Are Mommy Makeovers Expensive?

Motherhood is a life-changing experience that brings undeniable benefits, but after childbirth many women try and fail to get back the body they had before having children. That’s why mommy makeover surgery has become such a popular procedure.  But are mommy makeovers expensive.

What is a mommy makeover?

A mommy makeover is a combination of several procedures that are done to restore a woman’s body to its pre-pregnancy condition.  A breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction, are the most common procedures included in a mommy makeover.

Are Mommy Makeovers Expensive?

The cost of a mommy makeover can range anywhere from $9,000 to $20,000.  Factors that affect the cost of a mommy makeover include the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia fee, surgical facility fee, and pre and post-operative costs.

A mommy makeover is a very personalized procedure, so it’s important to note that the cost will vary significantly from one patient to another, depending on the procedures included.

A mommy makeover can be affordable for a woman doing only liposuction in a few areas and a breast lift, whereas it will be more expensive for a patient doing 3 or 4 procedures.  Patients will therefore have to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon in order to determine their individual cost.

How can I finance my mommy makeover?

Patients that don’t have the financial means to pay for their mommy makeover at once, can explore financing options like Care Credit.  Care Credit offers affordable financing for plastic surgery procedures, to qualified candidates.

Should I Get an Upper or Lower Blepharoplasty?

Should I Get an Upper or Lower Blepharoplasty?

If you would like to get rid of droopy eyelids and sagging skin around the eyes, blepharoplasty may be the best option for you.  Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, can rejuvenate the upper and lower eyelids and brighten your overall appearance.  But should you get an upper or lower blepharoplasty.

What’s the difference between an upper and lower blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty addresses droopy upper eyelids, whereas lower blepharoplasty corrects under-eye bags and wrinkles.   Blepharoplasty can be performed as a single procedure, or both surgeries can be done simultaneously to achieve optimal enhancement.

Should I Get an Upper or Lower Blepharoplasty?

The decision to have an upper or lower blepharoplasty will depend on your specific needs (click here to learn more).

If you need to correct sagging upper eyelid skin that is starting to cover your eyes, upper blepharoplasty may be the right procedure for you.  Upper blepharoplasty rejuvenates the eyes by removing excess skin and muscle that cause the upper eyelids to sag, and repositioning fat deposits that create puffiness (learn more).

If you would like to address puffy pouches or excess skin on the lower eyelids, lower blepharoplasty would be more appropriate for you.  This may involve an inside or outside lower eyelid lift.  The inside lower eyelid lift is done to remove or reposition fatty deposits below the eyes, while the outside lower eyelid lift eliminates excess skin.

Blepharoplasty can dramatically improve your appearance because it reduces the signs of aging around the eyes, so you will look younger and more alert.

How can I safely reduce the size of my nose?

How can I safely reduce the size of my nose?

Do you think your nose is too big, and would like it to look smaller and slimmer?  Its possible to resize your nose so that it’s a better fit for your other facial features.  Let’s take a look at how you can achieve the nose you want.

How can I safely reduce the size of my nose?

If you think your nose is too big and would like to get it tweaked, rhinoplasty or nose surgery can make it smaller.  Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is done to adjust the size or shape of the nose, or to repair functional problems.  It is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed each year.

Reducing the size of the nose with rhinoplasty

Reduction rhinoplasty may involve reducing the overall size of the nose, or reducing specific areas such as the tip or the bridge.

Rhinoplasty can be performed using a closed or open technique.  Both techniques involve incisions being made inside the nostrils, but with open rhinoplasty an additional incision is made in the area between the nostrils.

Depending on the problem being addressed, the surgeon will remove some cartilage and/or bone, in order to make the nose smaller.  It is also possible to make the nose narrower by repositioning the nasal bones.

What to expect after reduction rhinoplasty

Recovery after rhinoplasty takes approximately one week.  Most of the swelling should go down within 2-3 weeks, but there is usually residual swelling that can take several months to subside.

How Can I Treat Sagging Eyelids And Bags?

How Can I Treat Sagging Eyelids And Bags?

Do you have sagging eyelids and bags below the eyes that are making you look tired and old? If yes, you are probably interested in finding out what is the most effective treatment for sagging eyelids and bags. Once these issues are corrected your eyes will look refreshed and youthful once again.

How Can I Treat Sagging Eyelids And Bags?

You can treat sagging eyelids and bags with an eyelid lift. An eyelid lift, also called blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that is done to rejuvenate the eyelids. This may involve surgery on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or on both.

Upper eyelid surgery for sagging eyelids

Upper eyelids surgery corrects sagging of the eyelids, as it removes excess skin that is causing the eyelids to droop. Sagging eyelid skin is often caused by a decline in skin elasticity over time, due to the loss of collagen.

Upper eyelid surgery makes the eyes appear wider and more alert. In cases where droopy upper eyelid skin impairs vision, surgery will also correct the problem and ensure clearer vision.

Lower eyelid surgery for undereye bags

During lower eyelid surgery, the surgeon will remove excess skin and fat, along with muscle if required. The surgeon will also restore the natural contours of the lower eyelid.

Undereye bags occur as a result of the shifting of the natural supportive fat around the eyes, which makes the undereye appear puffy. Lower eyelid surgery gives the eyes a vibrant, more youthful appearance.

Best Non-Surgical Treatment to Eliminate My Muffin Top?

Have you tried everything to lose your muffin top but nothing works? If you have, and you’d rather not undergo invasive surgery, non-surgical fat reduction may be a good choice for you. But with so many options available, it’s not easy to determine which is the best non-surgical treatment to eliminate your muffin top.

What’s a muffin top?

A muffin top is the term used to describe the roll of belly fat that overspills the waistband when you wear pants or skirts that are ill-fitting or tight. It is often very difficult to get rid of that extra belly fat with diet and exercise alone, so some people turn to cosmetic treatments for help.

Best non-surgical treatment to eliminate my muffin top?

There are several non-surgical treatments that can help eliminate your muffin top, but CoolSculpting tops the list, because it is the world’s number one non-invasive fat reduction treatment (learn more).

Reduce that muffin top with CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical treatment that uses controlled cooling to get rid of unwanted belly fat.

The CoolSculpting device selectively targets the fat cells beneath the skin, without harming the surrounding tissue. The fat cells are frozen and eventually die. The dead cells are processed through the body’s natural waste system, and expelled in the following weeks.

Why CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is FDA cleared as a safe, effective fat reduction treatment, and works based on proven science known as cryolipolysis. In addition, CoolSculpting is generally well-tolerated, and requires minimal to no downtime.
