What causes gynecomastia and what are the treatment options?

Gynecomastia or breast prominence in men is a condition that is fairly common among young boys and adult men, but it does not put them at risk in any way. Despite this, the condition is often a source of considerable anxiety and unease for those who have it. Doctors are not quite sure what causes gynecomastia, but they have identified a hormonal link.

Causative Factors

During puberty, some males develop excess breast tissue due to the hormonal fluctuations that occur. Estrogen and testosterone are the primary hormones involved. If there is increased estrogen activity accompanied by a decrease in testosterone levels, this can trigger the abnormal growth of breast tissue.

Gynecomastia usually corrects itself naturally after a few months. However, there are cases in which this does not happen, and the condition may even worsen as time passes.

Male breasts may also experience abnormal growth in response to certain types of medication such as anabolic steroids, and anti-androgens.

Treatment Options

Depending on the amount of breast tissue and fat that is involved, gynecomastia can be treated with either direct excision or liposuction. However, some cases may require a combination of both procedures (learn more).

Surgery typically takes about an hour, and is done under local anesthesia at an outpatient facility. The breast tissue is removed via an incision made at the areola. Patients should be at their ideal body weight before considering surgery. They should also have realistic expectations about the surgical outcomes.

Male Breasts and regain your confidence

How to Get Rid of Male Breasts and regain your confidence

Gynecomastia is a condition in which the male breasts become enlarged. It is usually short-lived, but there are times when it lingers into adulthood, a situation some men find extremely embarrassing and un-masculine. Consequently, there are males out there who are interested in finding out how to get rid of male breasts.

Gynecomastia can have several causes, but it is primarily due to the enlargement of glandular tissue, often brought on by hormonal changes, especially during puberty. The hormonal fluctuations that occur during adolescence often elevate estrogen levels, leaving testosterone levels to lag. This can trigger gynecomastia, since estrogen controls the female features like breast development, while testosterone controls the male features.

Gynecomastia may also be caused by other factors including health conditions such as liver disease, as well certain medications like anabolic steroids.

How to get rid of male breasts
1. Surgical Excision: Excess male breast tissue is reversible, and can be removed surgically by excision. Surgery to remove the extra breast tissue is done on an outpatient basis using intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. There are different techniques that can be used for male breast surgery, but the incision is normally made around the areola.

2. Liposuction: In instances where men have a lot of fatty tissue, liposuction of the chest may be recommended. This is normally done with the use of a small tube known as a cannula that disrupts the fat, and then suctions it out.
