Eczema

What are the signs and symptoms of Eczema?

It’s been estimated that upwards of 30 million Americans (mostly young children and babies), suffer from some type of eczema. Although that estimate appears high, those figures don’t tell the whole story, because some people don’t bother going to the doctor to get a diagnosis. It’s therefore important that people know what are the signs and symptoms of eczema, so that they can get the proper treatment.

What is eczema?
Eczema is a chronic skin disease that causes the skin to become inflamed and itchy, and is also marked by red rashes.  Eczema can affect adults, children, and babies, and usually starts in childhood. While there is no cure for the disease, it can be successfully managed. Atopic eczema is the most common form eczema.

Signs and Symptoms
For most people, the first sign of eczema is the persistent itching of the skin, which is often quickly followed by rashes. However, the signs and symptoms vary for each individual (learn more).

Other symptoms include patches of dry, sensitive skin, bumps and crusting, inflammation, recurring rashes, and intense itching. Some people also have dark colored or scaly patches of skin. If these areas are scratched, the skin breaks out and blisters and cracks appear.

Eczema can show up anywhere on the body, but commonly appears on the face, legs, hands, upper chest, and neck. Children tend to develop symptoms in the inner creases of the knees and elbow.

Eczema is often inherited, so if you have a family history of the disease, be sure to visit the doctor immediately if you suddenly develop an itchy rash.
