Childbirth and pregnancy can transform a woman’s body in unexpected ways, and even very fit moms sometimes find it difficult to recapture their pre-baby body. When diet and exercise fail, it often takes a mommy makeover to get the body back in shape. But what are the most common procedures for a mommy makeover.
What exactly is a mommy makeover?
A mommy makeover is a combination of surgical procedures that are designed to address body changes that occur as a result of pregnancy. The procedures are generally done in a single surgery session, but there are times when two sessions may be required.
What Are the Most Common Procedures for Mommy Makeover?
The breasts and abdomen are the areas that usually undergo significant changes as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding, so mommy makeover procedures typically focus on these areas.
A mommy makeover most often includes a breast lift with augmentation, a tummy tuck, and liposuction.
Breast Lift with augmentation
Pregnancy can cause shapely, beautiful breasts to lose volume and become droopy and out of shape. A breast lift with augmentation restores the shape and volume of the breasts.
• A breast lift (mastopexy) improves the appearance of sagging, deflated breasts. Surgery involves removing excess skin that causes the breasts to sag, and reshaping the breast tissue. The breast tissue is lifted to a higher position on the chest wall, and the areola may also need to be reduced.
• A breast augmentation is often combined with a breast lift to provide optimal breast enhancement. Implants augment the breasts and add fullness. Silicone or saline implants are the usual breast implant choices. Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel, while saline implants contain sterile salt water. Breast augmentation makes the breasts larger and improves their overall shape.
Breast enhancement surgery is customized based on the needs and aesthetic goals of each patient, and can be performed using several different techniques.
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a procedure that is done to remove excess skin and fat in the abdomen, and repair separated or weak abdominal muscles. After pregnancy, many women are faced with loose abdominal skin and a pudgy midsection that no amount of diet and exercise can fix. The abdominal muscles often expand during pregnancy and may not return to their original shape after childbirth. A tummy tuck is the only way to flatten the tummy and tone the midsection.
Some women choose to include liposuction in their mommy makeover in order to remove fat bulges that accumulated during pregnancy. By removing these areas of unwanted fat they are able to restore pre-baby body contours. The abdomen, flanks, and thighs are common areas for liposuction.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that gets rid of pockets of stubborn fat, and tumescent liposuction is the method that is regularly used.
With tumescent liposuction, an anesthetic solution is injected into the treatment area at the start of the procedure. The solution helps to minimize bleeding during and after the operation. Liposuction is performed using a cannula which is inserted into the subcutaneous fat, through tiny incisions made in the targeted area. A cannula is a small thin tube with a suction attached. It is used to break up the fat, which is then removed via suction.
Who is a good candidate for a mommy makeover?
Doctors generally recommend that women considering a mommy makeover should be finished having children. Having children after a mommy makeover might cause a recurrence of some of the very same concerns that were addressed during surgery.
Mommy makeover candidates should have completely recovered from the effects of childbirth and breastfeeding. They should also be in good health, and near or at their ideal weight.
If you are interested in having a mommy makeover, it’s important to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine if you would be a good candidate.
