But unfortunately, most people have no idea how often they should get screened for skin cancer.

Skin cancer is a disease that is linked to excess sun exposure. It is a very common form of cancer, especially among young people. There are various types of skin cancer and although basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common, melanoma is the most seriousas it’s difficult to cure.

What is skin cancer screening?
Skin cancer screening refers to the visual examination of your skin by a medical professional, preferably a board certified dermatologist. The entire body is examined during the screening process in order to detect any unusual moles, spots, or lesions on the skin. A screening session takes 10-15 minutes to complete.

How often should you get screened for skin cancer?
People that are at risk for developing skin cancer should have a screening done at least once per year. This includes people that have had cancer previously, as well as individuals that spend considerable time in the sun due to work, or have a family history of skin cancer.

Monthly self-checks are also recommended and if you notice any newlesions or have any concerns, be sure to see your dermatologist right away.
