Are there side effects on patch testing?

If you are having a persistent rash accompanied by inflammation, and your doctor isn’t sure of the cause,he may recommend a patch test. A patch test is done to determine the underlying cause of the allergic reaction. Based on the results, doctors are able to suggest the most effective treatment. But before doing the test you should ask your doctor –Are there any side effects on patch testing?

Patch testing is a procedure that is done to determine the cause of contact dermatitis in patients. The patch test will confirm whether there is an allergic or irritant reaction to a specific allergen.

How is it done?

The substances being tested are applied to the back in special small patches, which are held in place with non-allergenic tape. Substances chosen are those that are frequently in contact with the skin, and may be likely suspects of your skin problem. The patches remain in place until the next visit to the doctor, which is usually within 48 hours. When the patches are removed the physician will examine the skin, and pinpoint any adverse reactions.

Side-effects to patch testing

If there is a positive reaction to the test substance, the skin becomes red and itchy. Thesesymptoms usually disappear within a few days, but in some cases there is a persistent reaction that lasts up to 1 month.  In rare cases patients have developed a burn-like reaction.
