How Can I Treat Facial Volume Loss?

If your cheeks look flat and hollow and your face looks deflated, you could be experiencing facial volume loss.  Addressing facial volume loss is an effective way to rejuvenate the face and restore a youthful appearance.  But how can you treat facial volume loss?

Understanding Facial Volume Loss

Most people don’t realize that volume loss is often the main reason the face appears old and tired.  Skin laxity, wrinkles, and fine lines occur due to changes in the fat structure of the face, as well as loss of collagen and elastin.

When you are young, the fat in your face is ideally positioned in areas such as the cheeks, temples, and under the eyes, giving the face a plump, youthful appearance.  However, the loss of volume over time causes the skin to sag and eventually wrinkle.

How Can I Treat Facial Volume Loss?

Dermal fillers can treat facial volume loss across all areas of the face.  There are several dermal fillers that can help with volume loss.  When dermal fillers are injected beneath the skin, they add volume to the soft tissue, giving the face a fuller, smoother appearance.   Depending on the type of dermal filler used, the results can last between 12 to 24 months.

Juvederm

The Juvederm family of fillers can address volume loss in multiple areas of the face.  Juvederm is comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a chemical substance that is naturally produced by the body and keeps the skin plump and hydrated.

Juvederm XC and Juvederm Vollure XC can be used to correct nasolabial folds and marionette lines, which are wrinkles around the nose and mouth.

Juvederm Voluma XC is specifically designed to address age-related volume loss in the midface and cheeks.  Juvederm Voluma can also augment the chin area and enhance the chin profile.

Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC can be used to add volume to thin lips.  They can also smooth lines around the mouth (perioral lines).

Sculptra Aesthetic And Radiesse

Fillers such as Sculptra and Radiesse also replenish facial volume, but they don’t work like HA fillers.  Sculptra and Radiesse are collagen stimulators.  This means they stimulate the skin to produce more collagen.

Collagen is a protein that is naturally produced by the body and provides underlying support for the cells and tissue.  The body’s production of collagen decreases with age, and this contributes to wrinkles and loss of facial volume.

Sculptra consists of a synthetic gel known as poly-L-lactic-acid (PLLA), which is a biodegradable synthetic material.  Sculptra is injected into the dermal layer of the skin and adds volume to hollow areas, such as the cheeks and temples.  It also restores fullness to medium to deep wrinkles and folds, specifically nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

The results of Sculptra can last up to 2 years.  However, results occur gradually as collagen production increases and the skin structure is reinforced.

Radiesse

Radiesse is another good choice for volumizing the face.  It smooths moderate to severe wrinkles such as nasolabial folds, and restores facial definition.  Radiesse also adds volume to the hands.

Radiesse is comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel carrier.  The calcium microspheres in Radiesse provide an instant lift to the injected areas, so results are immediate.  However, Radiesse also works beneath the skin to provide support for new collagen to grow.  The results typically last two years.

Would you like to address signs of facial aging without surgery?  Dermal fillers combat facial volume loss as they restore youthful contours, and provide a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the skin.
