How to effectively get rid of acne?

Acne is a persistent condition that may clear for a while, but keeps coming back.  That’s why people with the condition are often anxious to find out how to break the cycle and effectively get rid of acne.   Acne most often occurs on the face, chest, and back.

What causes acne?

Understanding what causes acne is helpful in getting to the root of the breakouts.

Acne is generally caused by the excess production of oil (sebum) by the sebaceous glands.  If the oil clogs the pores in the skin it can cause bacteria to develop and lead to different types of acne lesions i.e. pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.

How to effectively get rid of acne

While acne won’t go away overnight, there are several ways to effectively treat it.

  • Acid peels:  Peels using salicylic acid are frequently used to treat mild to moderate cases of acne.   Salicylic acid penetrates into the pores of the skin and deep cleans them by dissolving the oil and debris.  It also exfoliates the skin, helping to remove blackheads and whiteheads.
  • Laser therapy:  Photodynamic Laser Therapy (PDT) is one type of laser treatment that is used to resolve acne. PDT involves the use of special solutions (photosensitizers) that are applied to the skin along with light.  The treatment shrinks the oil glands and reduces the production of sebum, resulting in a reduction in acne.  PDT clears the skin and prevents future breakouts.
  • Acne extractions: This is a safe way to get rid of acne.  Dermatologists use a medical-grade comedone extractor tool to remove whiteheads and blackheads.
