Mohs Chemosurgery
Mohs micrographic surgery is a very precise technique used for the removal of cancerous cells. It allows the surgeon to target only the affected area, in order to remove the damaged tissue, while leaving the healthy tissue intact. The technique has a very high success rate, and additional treatments are not usually needed, because the cancer is fully removed.
During surgery fine layers of diseased skin are removed successively. It is then examined under a microscope to see if there are any cancer cells. If there are, the surgeon will keep removing fine layers until only cancer free skin remains. After this the incision is closed, and the wound sutured.
Repairing Mohs Surgery wounds
A dressing is normally put over the wound after surgery, and this should remain undisturbedfor at least 48 hours. During that time patients must be careful not to get the wound wet.
Doctors suggest putting an ice pack over the dressing once every hour in the period immediately following surgery, as this will help to minimize swelling, and reduce the pain.
It’s important not to disturb the wound, because as it heals a film of new skin cells will form over it, and this helps to keep the wound water-tight. The dressing is usually replaced about 3 days after surgery.
