How to safely remove warts and clear your skin

Warts are growths on the skin that are usually harmless, but can become bothersome after a while. Although warts frequently disappear on their own there are times when they do not. That’s when you will need to consult with a skin care professional who knows how to safely remove warts.

What causes warts?

Common warts can be found anywhere on the body, but especially the hands and feet. Warts are caused by viruses from the human papillomavirus family. The warts are created when the virus invades the top layer of the skin. They usually gain entry through a tiny scratch, and then quickly multiply. Warts are generally dome-shaped, and may be flat or raised.

Treatments for Common Warts

Liquid Nitrogen Freezing Treatment (Cyrotherapy): The liquid nitrogen is applied to the skin with the use of a cotton swab or probe. It is a minimally painful procedure that is usually done in the physician’s office. A numbing local anesthetic may be used if needed. It usually takes 2 to 4 treatments to remove the wart completely.
Vbeam Laser: The Vbeam laser is a pulsed dye laser that emits pulses of laser light that is absorbed by the wart, but does not affect the surrounding skin. The thermal energy destroys the infected skin cells, and also reduces the surrounding blood vessels that feed the wart. There is no recovery time, and side effects are rare.
Over-the-counter wart treatments are also available. However, it is important to consult with your doctor to find out which treatment would be right for you.
